An update to this morning's brief, covering stories published on 28 October that it did not include.
1. Google releases Gemini 4 Carbon to cyber defenders first
Google announced Gemini 4 Carbon on 28 October as its next frontier model, with a focus on cybersecurity and long-running engineering tasks12. Access starts with a small group of cyber defenders, widening to trusted partners through a dedicated programme, with no date yet for general developers; the benchmark results quoted are Google's own3.
CTO take: staged, defender-first releases are becoming the norm for models with serious offensive potential. Expect the same capability to reach attackers eventually, so shorten patch cycles now, as this week's PHP2Shell response showed. Security teams should also ask their vendors whether they are in these early-access programmes.
2. Azure grows 48% and demand still exceeds supply
Microsoft's quarterly results showed Azure revenue up 48%, ahead of estimates, with capital spending of $45.2 billion, below its own projection, which the company attributed to delivery timing rather than a change of plan4. Fortune reports that the CFO said demand still exceeds supply5.
CTO take: constrained AI capacity is a planning input, not a headline. If you depend on GPU or managed model capacity in a specific region, reserve it early, keep at least one alternative provider or model ready, and track AI cost allocation so you know which workloads deserve the capacity you do get.
3. Jio Platforms opens 21% up after India's largest IPO
Jio Platforms began trading on 28 October, with shares up more than 21% on debut after a record IPO; Reliance remains the majority owner, with Meta and Google affiliates also holding stakes6.
CTO take: a listed, heavily capitalised Jio raises the bar for digital infrastructure and AI services in India. For companies building there, expect more competition for engineering talent and more local cloud and AI options. Data-protection preparation for the DPDP Rules matters more as scale grows; see a DPDP-ready consent platform and fractional CTO in India.
4. Meta's Muse agent launches in Singapore with local partners
Meta made its personal AI agent, Muse, available in Singapore, with partners including Shopee and Grab78. On Grab, it can build a basket for a meal or essentials and wait for the user's approval before ordering; Meta says Muse asks for approval before sensitive steps such as purchases or sending email8.
CTO take: customers will increasingly arrive through agents rather than your app. If you run commerce, travel or services in Southeast Asia, check that your catalogue, pricing and booking APIs are machine-readable and that approval and refund flows work when an agent is acting for a person. See structured data for AI search and fractional CTO in Singapore.
What I'd do this week
- Ask security vendors whether they have early access to cyber-focused models, and shorten patch timelines regardless.
- Review AI and GPU capacity commitments by region, and name a fallback provider or model.
- Test your public APIs and product data from an agent's point of view: can it find, compare and book without scraping?
- Keep DPDP readiness on the plan if you operate in India.
